September 2023

Want to carry on getting the newsletter?

This week we are moving the Walkingworld website and all its services onto a new server. Inevitably there will be some disruption. During the transfer we will have to 'turn off' the website and only restore access to it when everything is successfully copied over. Please just wait for a few hours if you find you can't get to the website or download walks to the app.

Another change is to this newsletter which we are moving onto a new and more up to date service. As part of this we are asking all our members to confirm that they want to continue receiving it. The sign-up process is very simple - just click the link below and follow the instructions. If you don't sign up then, sadly, this will be the last newsletter you receive!

One of Europe's greatest walks
When hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, every day is a highlight - whether for the drama of the views (peaks and glaciers are no rare sight), the incredible variety of terrain, or the feeling of achievement that comes with exploring such an exceptional mountain landscape.

Self-guided specialists, Inntravel, are delighted to introduce not one but two new holidays along this most celebrated of routes. The first is an exhilarating, hotel-to-hotel hike that begins in the French spa town of St Gervais les Bains and ends with a spectacularly scenic finale in Chamonix, taking in many classic Alpine destinations along the way - including the elegant Italian mountain town of Courmayeur and Switzerland's gorgeous Val Ferret.

The second new holiday, meanwhile, explores from just two bases - Courmayeur and Chamonix - but makes good use of cable cars, buses and mountain trains to ensure you can still access the Tour's most unmissable moments. It also allows time for sightseeing of a different kind - visits to Europe's highest botanical gardens, to a thermal bath and by cable car up the Aiguille du Midi.

In such an iconic landscape, availability is always limited, so Inntravel encourage booking as soon as possible to secure your preferred 2024 dates.

Wainwright Society Calendar 2024
The Wainwright Society calendar is always very popular with Walkingworld members and makes a great present. The calendar includes beautiful photographs of the Lake District contributed by Society members alongside one of Alfred Wainwright's drawings of the same spot. All profits this year are being donated to The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association, the umbrella organisation for all the Cumbrian Rescue teams. The teams rely entirely on voluntary donations to undertake their vital emergency and life-saving work.

Cumbria's twelve mountain rescue teams have been busier than ever in 2023 and every penny of profit from calendar sales will help the teams to buy essential equipment and supplies. You can purchase the 2024 Calendar (£12 including postage in the UK) on the Wainwright Society's website.
