A number of notable points of interest, as well as the wide open spaces and distant views across Oxfordshire countryside, makes this a walk with much appeal. It takes in a small section of the long-abandoned ironstone railway and visits the village of Hanwell, with its own castle.

Built in the reign of Henry VII, the castle had four towers originally, but only one now remains. It stands near the much older church and both have royal, historical connections.

The lovely picture-book village of Wroxton, with pretty thatched cottages of ironstone grouped around the village pond, boasts an abbey, now a college. It stands in extensive grounds with wide lawns, tall trees and a lake. The route passes a tall obelisk, directly in line with a folly in the distance. The entire duration of this walk is pleasant, with an element of surprise added to the beauty of the area.
