Holyhead Mountain
|
Walk
ID: 860 |
A very interesting start with a visit to a prehistoric hut group. The walk climaxes with a hill-fort on the summit and magnificent 360-degree views across Anglesey and out to sea. It finishes off with a walk along the cliffs, with fine views to South Stack and its lighthouse.
There are two bird reserves in the area, one of which is Ellen's Tower, visited on this walk. Here the RSPB provides telescopes for viewing the puffins and other seabirds. Visiting the tower is free.
There are 263 species of wild plants in this area, a hermitage that dates from the 3rd Century, some of the most demanding cliff climbs in the UK and in Holyhead itself there is a very well-preserved Roman fort.
