Gairloch - Flowerdale Falls

Walk ID: 827

The walk explores Flowerdale, a glen sheltered from most winds and so having a microclimate of its own, supporting plants e.g. bog orchids, bog asphodels, butterwort and sundew and animals e.g. voles, pine marten, stoats, weasels and buzzards not commonly found in the area. The path from the car park to the falls is good; if returning the same way no special footwear is required, but if doing the full walk boots will be more comfortable. There are some viewpoints en route with views of the whole glen, to the Hebrides. From July to September, anti-midge measures are advised.

Note: the estate is going to carry out improvements to the paths at Flowerdale (Gairloch) during the spring and summer of 2004, so they warn of possible diversions.

26/07/05 - Michael & Marian Vaughn : Did this walk on our recent holiday to the North West Highlands. Staying at the Gairloch Hotel we had a short walk to the harbour and the Flowerdale Glen. Glorious day, hot and sunny, but the midges were fierce despite protection!! Lovely walk and a very welcome drink was had by us both at the Old Inn at the end! Note that a new path has now been made between waypoints 1 and 6 which avoids any traffic; this is sign-posted from the car park.
