Tower Hill - South Dockland - Greenwich - North Dockland - Tower Hill

Walk ID: 748

This walk will give you an incredible insight into London's past, present and future. Starting with the chic area around Butler's Wharf, you soon move into a more down-to-earth domain with the strongest links with the past when London's docks were a bustling working area. You pass a multitude of warehouse buildings, many now converted into living accommodation. The very names of Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Deptford conjure up a splendid, but varied past.

You will pass Brunel's Engine House, ancient inns and churches, finally arriving at Greenwich, which is full of interest. If you are there at midday you should see the ball rise and fall above the dome of the Royal Observatory and from the hill on which it stands you will have unrivalled views over London, the millennnium dome and the Thames as it flows towards the Thames Barrier, the Woolwich Chain Ferry and the sea. It is a walk to complement Walk 728, which visits all the 'honeypot' sites. It is the London of the connoisseur, a walk not to be missed.

The finale too, with the walk beneath the Thames, is an unforgettable experience. You walk inside a tube tiled in white with nearly a quarter of a million tiles, fifty or so feet below the river. On the ride back to your start point on the Dockland Light Railway, try to get a seat at the very rear of the train, where you have unobstructed views.
