Oakenshaw Nature Reserve

Oakenshaw Nature Reserve is a lovely place to bring children (and of course adults) for a short walk. The walk takes you through the young plantation trees of the Hundred Acre Plantation and round the three ponds that form the wetlands. When we were here the ponds were frozen, so the ducks were very grateful for some extra food! The land is owned by the Forestry Commission and there is a sign by the entrance saying that you are welcome to walk here. (One of the paths used is not shown on the OS map, however from the signs in the reserve it is obvious that the path should be followed). If refreshments are required, a trip to nearby Whitworth Hall (grid ref 236346) may be an idea afterwards. At Whitworth Hall there is another duck-pond, a herd of deer and importantly, a pub with a soft play area!
