Newport - River Medina - Cowes - Newport
|
Walk
ID: 544 |
This is a circular walk following the Isle of Wight's principal river, the Medina. Now used mostly for leisure, it has a rich industrial past, much of which can be seen during the walk - see the additional information for brief descriptions. The start and finishing point, Newport Quay, was once the principal trading port with the mainland, whilst Cowes and East Cowes were famous for their shipbuilding.
This is an easy, flat walk suitable for both winter and summer, usually without too many muddy spots. Following the picturesque Medina Valley, good shelter may be found in windy or wet weather. At Newport Quay, refreshment and toilet facilities are available at the riverside centre (east bank) and the Quay Arts Centre (west bank).
Halfway along the walk on the east bank is the Folly Inn, offering meals and snacks. In nice weather you can sit on the verandah overlooking the estuary, whilst watching boats and feeding the swans. Refreshments and toilet facilities can also be found in East Cowes.
The old railway bridge on the west bank (original Cowes to Newport railway) crosses a nature reserve, with a wide variety of birds and ducks. The small woodlands either side of the track are the homes of red squirrels, foxes and rabbits. A large variety of wildflowers may be found in the meadows along the track.
