Clumber and Surrounding Forests - Robin Hood Way

Walk ID: 455

This circular walk is almost entirely in National Trust land. It starts in the heart of National Trust property Clumber Park, payment required for non-members, at the centre. This hamlet, with church typical of the area, adjoins the lake, landscaped by Capability Brown and is a beautiful and popular spot for walkers, strollers and cyclists. Your route is well-arked for the most part, although it can be muddy in places. It leaves the park area and heads to the estate village of Hardwick, via a lakeside path, winding through mature woodland. This section provides ample opportunity to see waterfowl and broadleafed woodland birds. From Hardwick you head south across the only ford on the estate to the NT woodlands up the hill. These woods are mixed, with small glades in places. The forest tracks are well-marked and describe a fairly straight forward route through the trees. Some of the park is laid out with specimen trees, other is active afforestation, but a good proportion contains oak and birch and comprises part of the much larger Sherwood Forest. A short distance away, the Sherwood Forest Centre provides access to another part of the forest and exploits the links with Robin Hood.

17/08/09 - Suzette Maguire : We thoroughly enjoyed this walk. We did have a little trouble finding the forest road (7) because it is a gated road and the gate was locked - we found a path link to it though. Also, in our tiredness, we totally missed 8 (and therefore 9) but still ended up at 10!? All in all a lovely, leisurely walk around Clumber. Thank you.

16/04/04 - SARAH PELLATT : SARAH PELLLATT: I DID ENJOY THIS WALK, BUT UNFORTUENTLY A LARGE AREA OF TREES HAVE BEEN FELLED, IT IS WORTH THE JOURNEY AS CLUMBER PARK IS BEAUTIFUL. THANKYOU GRAHAM WILSON FOR SHARING IT WITH US.

15/04/09 - Robert Greybrook : 6 : Instead of walking along road it is possible to turn right along bridleway just before main road and join up with the path described at 7 - far more pleasant. 7 : Suggest inserting make a right turn, just before the South Lodge. Otherwise an excellent walk.

10/02/02 - Judy Delin : This is a very nice walk, so thanks for a nice couple of hours -- worth the drive from Derbys to Clumber Park.
