Duchie's Pieces and Aldbury Round
|
Walk
ID: 3725 |
Aldbury is an idyllic village nestling at the foot of the Chilterns and there are many walks which can be undertaken from its duck-pond and stocks. Aldbury Nowers, also known as Duchie's Piece, is an SSSI and a fine example of chalk grassland renowned as having the best butterflies in the county. Over half of all the British butterfly species have been recorded here. The area also has many small and easily overlooked plants which are rare in other areas. The walk takes us from the village across the fields with horses in pasture and on into the woods of the Pieces. The path skirts the lower reaches through the nature reserve then takes a steep climb of some 45m to give good views over the Vale of Aylesbury to the Tring Reservoirs. It then returns along the upper path of the Ridgeway to the village, where friendly pubs await.

17/12/06 - David Firman :
A very enjoyable walk , especially after the golf course. Be prepared for plenty of mud however.
