This is one of the classic walks in France, through one of the most impressive sections of the Gorge du Verdon, Europe's answer to the Grand Canyon. Though only 11km, the walk takes 6 or 7 hours due to rough ground, steep in places with artificial sections, all of which have to be negotiated with great care.

The walk, because of the duration, is normally done one way; you can do it in either direction. We chose to do it starting at Chalet de la Maline south of la Palud-sur-Verdon and going to Point Sublime. In this direction you avoid the steep climb at the end of the walk from the gorge floor to the northern rim of the canyon.

The walk is well-prepared with many waymarks and fixed ropes in the steep sections. There are several metal stepped pitches including the impressive flights at the Breche Imbert. You also have two tunnels to go through at the northern end of the walk: the first tunnel is not so long but the second is much longer and cannot be negotiated without a torch.

A challenging walk, but you are rewarded with some of the most impressive views to be found anywhere in Europe. This is a 'must do' walk through one of the natural wonders of the world. Don't forget your camera with plenty of film and batteries.
