Stornoway Castle Grounds
|
Walk
ID: 3424 |
This circular walk starts off along the foreshore of the Inner Harbour of Stornoway and passes in front of the grandiose Lews Castle. Seals can be seen in the Inner Harbour and an abundance of waterfowl. After the ramshackle Cuddy Point, vehicular traffic is prohibited and the route leads right above the foreshore. The view of the town changes continually. After just over a mile, the path turns inland along the Creed River, which can be spectacular if in spate. At the bridge, half a mile upriver, the route of this walk turns slightly uphill and skirts Gallows Hill. Although not included in the formal route, this is a spectacular viewpoint. From there on, it is a woodland walk, with tantalizing glimpses of the town. At time of writing, late 2005, the ravages of the January 2005 hurricane have not been completely cleared up and many fallen trees remain. In spring, this can be a haven of wildflowers. The route regains the metalled road at Lews Castle College, behind the castle itself. A short cut through a dense stretch of woods returns the walker to the starting point.
