Iolaire Monument

Walk ID: 3281

The walk starts at the bus station and leads along the sea wall to the coastguard station and Battery Point, then down to the shore at Sandwick Bay. Beyond that, the small village of Lower Sandwick is reached, which is the point where the views start to extend right down the east coast.

Lower Sandwick is a quiet crofting village, looking out over Stornoway. The best view of the town is had from the southern end of Lower Sandwick, just before you descend to Little Sandwick Bay. Stornoway is framed by the bulk of the Barvas Hills, five miles to the north-west. It's a very nice picture on a sunny day.

After Lower Sandwick, the walk becomes slightly rougher, finally gaining height by the untidy clutter of Stoneyfields Farm. Once through the gate by the farmhouse, things become boggy and prickly for a few hundred yards.

At the highest point of the walk, the view broadens out to the peninsula of Point (Eye Peninsula on many maps), the islands of Holm and mountains on the Scottish mainland, fifty miles away. There is a gravel path down to the monument and an explanatory plaque at its start.
