Carbeth Hill and its Hut Community
|
Walk
ID: 3256 |
This gentle walk-with-a-difference takes a country road and a short section of the West Highland Way and so on to the wooded slopes of Carbeth Hill and the remarkable hut community set amongst trees, the result of what has been called a 'grand social experiment'. The first resident was an ex-serviceman who built a holiday home here in 1919, on a plot of land rented from the philanthropic owner. By the late Thirties, there were about thirty huts in the community; nowadays there are over two hundred sites, most of them occupied. The huts are built from a patchwork collection of materials and can vary markedly in style, size and colour!
