Shropshire is noted as being among the worst in England for footpath maintenance and signposting. For this reason I chose to use one of the walks promoted from the Secret Hills Discovery Centre - The Wart Hill Wander - which is well-marked on the ground. I found though, that the end was disappointing, too long a trudge through lanes, so I worked out a finish which extends the amount of river-walking and uses some paths across arable fields near the town. This walk is dedicated to the memory of my uncle, the late Sergeant Major J Peall, M.M. of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry; it was with him that I climbed my first hill in the county when I was a boy.
