Fairwarp - Ashdown Forest - Fairwarp
|
Walk
ID: 3063 |
Start from Fairwarp Christ Church, known as 'The Church on the Forest' as it stands quite apart from the village in a beautiful setting beside the B2026 and is situated between Duddleswell to the north and Maresfield to the south. We walk part of the long-distance path aptly named 'The Wealdway', which runs from Gravesend to Eastbourne through some of the most scenic countryside in the south-east. The Visitors Centre on Ashdown Forest lies between Colemans Hatch and Wych Cross on the Ridge Road and is well worth a visit. It not only gives useful information on the flora and fauna of the forest, but also has maps and guides to the area. A booklet 'Information on Ashdown Forest' is also available, as well as a very informative website. Ashdown Forest, famous for Winnie The Pooh and Friends, covers an area of 6,400 acres of the High Weald. It is the remains of the Lancaster Great Park deer hunting forest and in ancient times it spread over twice the present area. Duddleswell Tea Rooms are situated on the B2026 to the north of Fairwarp and are open daily. Ashdown Forest Garden Centre lies just to the north of the tea rooms and has a Greenfingers Cafe, open daily including Sunday between 10 and 5.

22/08/05 - John Flint :
I went on this walk 21/8/05. And what a beatiful day for a walk.
When I got upto Gills Lap how great the views were. And the colour of the heather this time of the year is so breath taking.
Great walk.
22/03/07 - Graham Hooker :
Walked this route 21 March 07. Views were great, spring flowers just coming through and not much mud despite the unusually wet winter. One to highly recommend. The bridleway at waymark 13 remains as carved up now as it was in 05 - but its not a problem.
