Kenfig Pool - Kenfig Burrows - Sker Beach

Walk ID: 2865

Kenfig Pool is the largest natural lake in Glamorgan, set amongst sand-dunes with views to Swansea Bay and the Gower Peninsula. The dunes and wetlands at Kenfig National Nature Reserve are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and support many specialised plants, insects, birds and animals, several of which are very rare. These include the fen orchid (the same variety that occurs at Whiteford Burrows), shrill carder bee and medicinal leech. There are two bird hides overlooking Kenfig Pool and sightings are posted outside the Reserve Centre. Kenfig Hill and District Angling Association fish the 70-acre freshwater pool for its coarse fish.

This circular walk passes the Prince of Wales, a 16th Century public house and ancient town hall, before continuing to the Bonaventure bird hide, which was originally built by Dick Bonaventure Jones and the M.S.C. Community Programme Team in 1987. The route is readily combined with a trip to the beach, which is best visited at low tide.
