Jedburgh Abbey - Kelso Abbey

Walk ID: 2855

The views of the rolling Borders landscape together with the historical backdrops, make this a beautiful walk. The walk begins facing the formidable ruins of Jedburgh Abbey. The walk sets off following the banks of the winding River Jed before heading out of Jedburgh on a country road to join the Roman Road 'Dere Street'. Leaving Dere Street, the route follows a disused railway line before joining the banks of the River Teviot. The walk passes under the famous Roxburgh Viaduct and past the once mighty Roxburgh Castle before reaching the world-famous Junction Pool, where the Teviot meets the River Tweed in Kelso. The walk ends crossing the bridge which was used as the model for London Bridge, before reaching the finish at Kelso Abbey. With the majority of the walk being in open countryside, wildlife is abundant. The walk is relatively flat, although at thirteen miles in length it should not be looked upon as an easy walk. Walkers may join the route at various locations if a shorter version is desired, most notably at the Old Jedbank Station, Waymark 7, NT 662 241.

Note: although there are no facilities on the route, Jedburgh and Kelso have numerous cafés, pubs, hotels and shops.
