Costa da Morte, Day 2: Camelle - Arou - Santa Marina - Camarinas
|
Walk
ID: 2802 |
Second part of Laxe - Camelle - Arou - Santa Marina - Cemiterio dos Ingleses - Camarinas (from Camelle).
This is a coastal walk along part of Spain's desolate Costa da Morte. Though always beautiful, this area has seen countless ships lost to Atlantic storms; the walk visits the 'English Cemetery' where are interred sailors lost when the British training vessel Serpent sank in November 1890. Although the route is mainly along coastal paths, roads or beaches, with two stiff ascents and several other undulating stretches I have classified it as a 'hill scramble' overall.
The route is adapted from the published 'Spindrift Walk', which advocates an overnight stop at Camelle. In order to equalise our walking distance over the two days, my companion and I pressed on to Santa Marinas on Day One; here we were fortunate to be allowed to camp in the garden of the local bar. It must be stressed however, that there is virtually no habitation and little chance of any liquid replenishment after Santa Marinas, so walkers must take adequate water. This advice is heartfelt, as we were not sufficiently provident and were reduced to strict water rationing over the last few miles.
