Low Barnes Nature Reserve is run by the Durham Wildlife Trust and the reserve includes numerous bird hides and bird-boxes along the route. At the start of the walk, pause by the bird feeding station where there is also an information board. If you are interested in ornithology, make sure you bring binoculars with you.

Although the walk's distance may not take a long time, allow adequate time to stop by the river (River Wear), or to enter any of three bird hides along the path.

After completing the walk, you can stop by the visitor centre, where there is a small cafe and informative displays.

Hardwick Hall country park is undergoing re-development work at present. The walk is still very enjoyable, however the nature trail is currently closed. Continue along the path which follows the ponds instead.
