Tarifa - Punta Paloma - Baelo Claudia
|
Walk
ID: 2208 |
This is a very straightforward beach walk with many interesting features, covering as it does some of the main windsurfing / kite surfing areas, stunning seascapes across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa and the major Roman archaeological site of Baelo Claudia.
The walk as described is from east to west and you can either return the same way or catch a bus or taxi back to the start. If you are only walking one way it is best to check the wind direction, which can be quite strong and choose a start point so that you are walking with a following wind.
Depending on the tides, it is possible to complete the walk entirely on the beach except in one or two places where it is very rocky; do not worry though, there is always an alternative path further up the foreshore.
A major city in Roman times, Baelo Claudia occupies a wonderful site at the end of Bolonia Bay, overlooking the sea. Founded in 200BC, it was granted its city status by Emperor Claudius in about 45AD. It was famous for manufacturing the much-prized Roman delicacy called garum, made from tuna heads and guts in a mixture with wine and olive oil (no wonder the Roman Empire went into decline). Fortunately the smell has now diminished and the ruins are a delight with a major forum, theatre, temples and the fish factory itself already excavated and suitably restored.
No particular permission is necessary (access to the beach is always free by law in Spain) but keep as close to the beach as possible, particularly around Punta Paloma, as this is a military area and restricted. Take your passport with you if you intend to visit Baelo Claudia Roman site (highly recommended) as entrance is free on presentation of an EU passport.
