Ben Vorlich and Stuc a' Chroin
|
Walk
ID: 2093 |
Ben Vorlich (984m) is a popular peak due to its easy access and the superb views from the summit. It can be tackled on its own but it is certainly worth allocating time to visit its near neighbour Stuc a' Chroin (975m). The ascent begins at the shore of Loch Earn and climbs through sparse woodland before reaching open hillside. The path is obvious but becomes steep and stony as it zigzags towards the summit.
The summit is actually a ridge with a trig point at the west end and a cairn 150m away at the east. From the trig point, old iron fenceposts mark the route across the col or bealach towards Stuc a' Chroin. A rocky buttress blocks the way upwards, but this can be bypassed by a rocky path to the right or a steep grassy climb to the left. The buttress is topped by a cairn with a memorial plaque, but the true summit is marked by two further cairns 500m to the south.
The return route retraces the outward path as far as the low point of the col, before branching north and contouring around the west of Ben Vorlich to rejoin the outward path about 3km above the loch.
