Grazalema - Merendero el Boyar - Penon Grande - Grazalema

Walk ID: 2037

Grazalema is one of the jewels of the white villages of Andalusia and the Sierra Grazalema one of the most spectacular walking and wildlife areas in the region.

This walk is an ideal introduction to the area to help to get acclimatised, not too demanding but with plenty of magnificent scenery, flora and birdwatching interest, with good chances to see griffon vultures and golden eagles.

The route starts at the car park of the campsite above Grazalema (Camping Tajo Rodillo), initially on an excellent landscaped path generally following the line of the Grazalema to el Bosque road to Merendero del Boyar picnic spot and viewpoint. The route then heads steeply upwards towards the centre of the central sierra massif through several hanging valleys (llanos) and then heading back towards Grazalema between soaring limestone cliffs, to emerge at the base of Penon Grande that dominates the village below. The final part of the route descends back to the car park with breathtaking views of Grazalema and the surrounding countryside. You can extend either end of the walk by starting or ending in the centre of the village, but if in more urgent need cold drinks and traditional Spanish tapas can be obtained at the very reasonably priced bar at the campsite.

18/07/05 - elaine key : We did this walk on july 3rd 2005 in very hot sun and thoroughly enjoyed it, we did get lost a couple of times but easily corrected ourselves(at no. 7, cairn easy to miss (we did) if you follow the blue arrows to a wall with a gate you have gone too far and need to retrace steps approx. 50yds. The second place we went off track was at point no.10 we went too far east, as soon as you get through the gap in the stone wall keep looking left for the path upwards to then double back slightly. With quite a few stops it took us 4 hours we had a great day even with the boys aged 12 and 13. Lots of water essential!!!
