St Cuthbert's Way - Part 3
|
Walk
ID: 1755 |
The St Cuthbert's Way leaves Harestanes Visitors' Centre, passing through the grounds of Monteviot House before crossing the River Teviot using a suspension bridge. We then follow the line of the Roman road Dere Street to Craighall, admiring some magnificent views of the Cheviot Hills before us and the Eildon Hills behind on a clear day, where we walk on to Cessford Castle. This was once the home of the Kers of Cessford, but now stands as an imposing unstable ruin. Continuing, we reach the small village of Morebattle where refreshments and accommodation are provided if needed. To make this a circular, a bus can be caught to return to Harestanes, but times need to be checked at the visitors' centre before leaving.
For further details of the diversion (see comment) please see the St Cuthbert's Way website (link below). As soon as possible Walkingworld's route will be updated.

08/10/04 - Isla Kirk :
At point 7 on this walk, the route has been redirected due to disputes with a local landowner. The St Cuthberts Way route marker posts give clear guidance when actually doing the walk but I found it quite disconcerting that for many miles, I appeared to be heading in the opposite direction to that stated in this route guide. You rejoin the old route just before Cessford Castle. NB one latitude line is missing between the two OS maps - again, this caused quite a bit of confusion.
