If you ever needed proof that you don't have to climb the biggest hills to get the best views, this is it. With an altitude of "only" 1,800 feet Criffel is by no means the biggest hill around, but its isolated position gives wide views in all directions. Although distant hills may catch the eye, the rolling farmland below and the beautiful shapes in the sands of the Nith Estuary are what really make the view. The walk itself is not difficult, but it is steep in places and the relatively low start means you do have to climb almost all 1,800 feet!
