Kingussie - Beinn Bhreac – Carn an Fhreiceadain

Walk ID: 1622

This walk is an excellent introduction to the Monadhliath Mountains which lie to the west of their much more frequented cousins the Cairngorms. Although lacking the splendour of Cairngorms, the Monadhliath Mountains with their more rounded summits stretch out as a beautiful and desolate wilderness.

The walk is almost entirely on either a private surfaced road or good track, making it not only good underfoot in all but the worst weather, but also easy to navigate. It is an ideal introduction to hillwalking in the area as its two summits, Beinn Bhreac at 2,730ft and Carn an Fhreiceadain at 2,880ft, give a grand vista of two fine mountain ranges.

The walk itself starts from the outskirts of Kingussie and after crossing a footbridge onto a private road, passes through part of a golf course and a plantation; it then emerges onto the open lower slopes of these lovely hills. From this point on you are unlikely to encounter anyone else as you go and fine views will accompany you throughout, as you cross the heather-clad hillsides to climb up to Beinn Bhreac and then over to Carn an Fhreiceadain. From the summit of Carn an Fhreiceadain you return by descending to and crossing Allt Mor on a bridge and then down this pleasant part of the walk to enter the plantation, to rejoin the outward route at Pitmain Lodge and back down the surfaced road to the start.
