Port Elphinstone River and Canal Walk

Walk ID: 1582

This walk starts by following a quiet path alongside the River Don. It then rises slightly through deciduous woods, with vistas over the surrounding countryside. After this it continues along quiet country lanes, before passing through more trees and a field (again with more good views). It then returns to the outskirts of the town, where it passes through another field in which there is a prehistoric stone circle. The walk then descends gently to river level, where it continues along a restored path by a canal. The banks and remnants of the old canal are the legacy of a canal which used to link Port Elphinstone with Aberdeen.

26/01/06 - Ian Booth : This is a very enjoyable walk. After point 778200 at end of Kemnay road, it is possible to turn right and continue on same side of road until you come to an ornamental arch for Port Elphinstone designed by local schoolchildren. Then cross the road before the garage and enter Mill road. (Walkingworld Administrator - Please note that due to the road by the ornamental arch being so busy Walkingworld recommends that people cross via the pedestrian crossing as per the route guide.)
