Glen Trool: Caldons - Lamachan Hill - Curleywee - Caldons

Walk ID: 1464

Glen Trool: Caldons - Lamachan Hill - Curleywee - White Laggan Bothy - Loch Trool - Caldons

A challenging trek through the spectacular wilderness of the Galloway Hills, scaling two contrasting mountains in the Minnigaff Group, with immense and unparallelled views of the rugged grandeur of the region. From the former campsite at Caldons, your route follows the Caldons Burn up onto the shoulder of Cambrick Hill and on up to the broad-backed summit of Lamachan Hill at 2,350ft. From here you cross onto Bennanbreck, thence down and across the Nick of Curleywee and steeply up again onto Curleywee itself. The views from here are superb! A careful descent is now needed down Curleywee's northerly slopes and on to the White Laggan Bothy. The walk continues along the Southern Upland Way and ultimately reaches Loch Trool, following its left-hand (eastern) shore along an undulating path leading back to Caldons.

Please note that there are no refreshments available on this walk, though they may be had at the Glentrool Visitor Centre at Stroan Bridge.

20/07/02 - CARL C. ROE : Yes I can confirm how wet it can be, as last month my Wife and I walked the Southern Upland Way from Portpatrick to Traquair when we visited Caldons and Loch Trool it was raining all day and we were bothered by Midges as were all the Campers at Caldons. But having said the above it is a beautiful area to walk in. CARL

20/02/06 - Steve White : A long day out, but worth the views from the top peaks. The Anson wreck at Bennanbrack is still there. I assume most of it has been scavenged over the years, but the scar and remaining wreckage are clearly visible about 50m down from the peak. Returned via the North side of Loch Trool, so 6.5 hours in total including many photo/snack stops. Would probably just go to Curlywee and back if I go again.

10/10/05 - Alan Paxton : Did part of this walk on Sat. I found the long haul up the Caldons Burn and on up the open hill a bit of a slog and was pretty tired before reaching the top of Lamachan, however the views were magnificent on the clearest day for some time. I felt Curlywee was too far for me so headed down to the road which was far from easy and back to the car. In 5hrs.40 mins only 30 mins or so spent on top. I met some walkers who did it the other way round which seemed a lot better. I'm still on a learning curve. Cheers ... Alan
