This is a wonderful walk in any season, as there is such a variety of interest at any time of year. If your interest is birds then dippers, mergansers, woodpeckers and buzzards abound. If history is your fancy, then the town of Peebles, Neidpath Castle and the old railway itself should more than satisfy. There are the salmon which can sometimes be seen leaping, there are beautiful flowers and woods and lovely views of the now peaceful countryside. This walk provides no test of navigation but it can be very rough underfoot and in places very slippery and muddy, especially after prolonged rain. It is not really suitable for the very young or those not fit enough to tackle at least a dozen stiles (not all in good condition) and half a dozen staircases. There are some steep drops down to the river in the wooded parts. The route also runs through fields of stock (cattle, sheep and horses) so any dogs should be kept under close control. Where the walk enters the Barns Estate there is a notice that dogs should be kept on leads. This is not a walk for those who want truly wild places, but once past the castle and the viaduct there is quiet solitude, especially midweek and out of holiday season. If you haven't time to complete the whole circuit then the walk can easily be shortened by crossing the Tweed at any of the bridges.
