Glasgow Central - River Clyde - Glasgow Green - Glasgow Central
|
Walk
ID: 1200 |
A pleasant walk from the centre of Glasgow along the Clyde to Glasgow Green. The return route takes you via George Square back to Central Station.
The walk takes you past many of the architectural wonders of Glasgow (which hosted the festival of Architecture & Design in 1999).
The walk begins in Glasgow's Central Station, in a fabulous building which has been tastefully upgraded through the years. Continuing down Union Street, the first major crossroads reached is known as 'Boot's Corner', as there used to be a large Boots the Chemist on one of the corners. Unfortunately, nowadays all four corners are home to fast food outlets.
Once you reach the riverside you will see the first of the tourist information boards, which will give you more background on the sites passed on the walk.
Walking along the riverbank you will pass St Anne's Cathedral before reaching Glasgow Green, situated opposite the Sheriff Courts and close to the High Court and Mortuary.
Walking through Glasgow Green you reach the People's Palace.
Returning to the entrance of the park, the walk takes you up the Saltmarket to the Trongate. From here the walk passes through what is now known as the Merchant City, which is full of lovely boutiques and numerous cafes and bars.
Finally we reach George Square, which makes an impressive site (even without the helter-skelter in the waymaker photo!)
A short walk from George Square through Royal Exchange Square takes you back to Central Station and the start of the walk.
