Aberlady Bay - Gullane Bents - Yellowcraig - Dirleton

This linear route links three of East Lothian's most beautiful beaches. It starts at the Local Nature Reserve of Aberlady, which is an internationally important birdlife area with its vast sands and mudflats. It walks around some of the world-famous golf courses at Gullane and around and over Gullane Bents, one of the finest beaches in the UK.
It then hugs the coast, past some dramatic rock formations and caves, eventually reaching Yellowcraig, another beach with spectacular views. The last leg turns inland, finishing at the quaint village of Dirleton, complete with pub, hotel and a huge castle.
It is possible to get back to the start point by bus.

A great walk - we did it on 23rd June 2005, and at low tide, so we managed to do steps 4 to 15 on the beach the whole way, which adds some interesting views of some of the very colourful rock formations around here! However, by my GPS, the total distance was 13.27 MILES, rather than km, although the total time wasn't too far off (took about 5 hours with a few stops for photos etc). Puffins, kestrels, wagtails, not to mention numerous other sea birds kept us interested the whole way along the beach stretch. The bus from Dirleton to Aberlady is recommended, as the bit along the road is a real let down after such a superb first half!
