Kirkby Stephen - Lammerside Castle - Kirkby Stephen(Walk ID: 4) An attractive and varied walk which can be reached easily by foot from the market town of Kirkby Stephen. The route follows the River Eden, passing the ancient Wharton Hall and with an optional detour, takes in the atmospheric ruins of Lammerside Castle.

Kirkby Stephen - Nine Standards Rigg(Walk ID: 4210) The cairns which form the Nine Standards are just about visible from some parts of the town and are a major attraction for walkers despite the many beautiful riverside and valley walks available. The ascent is a long but steady climb and I have chosen to use the now surfaced fell road to gain height easily. This is also the way that the Coast to Coast Walk goes. The descent is by moorland paths, less distinct, muddier and rougher, but once down there are good bridleways and a short riverside stretch to use.

The Eden Viaducts(Walk ID: 3888) Explore the impressive stone viaducts that carried trains over deep valleys to the south of Kirkby Stephen on the now-closed Stainmore railway. Return along the banks of the River Eden.

Smardale Wildlife Reserve(Walk ID: 3375) A lovely, simple and easy walk along the Smardale Wildlife Reserve, a disused railway and a haven for wildlife. Cross a spectacular viaduct to see limekilns before returning along the other side of the valley; not a walk for anyone with bad vertigo.

Sunbiggin Tarn - Little Asby - Sunbiggin Tarn(Walk ID: 313) An amazingly varied walk in the heart of the upper Eden Valley. The walk has stretches over limestone pavements, through fields with dry-stone walls, over heather-covered fells and a truly remote river valley.
