Shap and Haweswater (Walk ID: 3825)
I have rated this walk as a hill scramble because it really is a bleak area in winter and all the terrain is fairly high; in summer I would not think it as difficult. It crosses fields given over either to grazing or to growing hay and passes Shap Abbey before reaching Haweswater and then Naddle Farm. From there a bridleway climbs to 330m and descends to the pastures and a walk high above the River Lowther, past the abbey once more and on to Keld Chapel and the Goggleby Stone.

Shap, the Abbey and Rosgill (Walk ID: 3826)
This is an undemanding walk over easy terrain to the ruins of ancient Shap Abbey. Easy walking through meadows follows, with only one stiff climb which is up the lane from the river to Rosgill Village. This is followed by a high-level walk with river below and the eastern fells beyond. Before the walk finishes there is an opportunity to visit Keld Chapel (National Trust) and wonder at the Goggleby Stone, erected in Neolithic times. The only other walkers you are likely to meet will be on Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk, which passes this way.

Shap, the Abbey and Keld Chapel (Walk ID: 3827)
The walk crosses fields given over either to grazing or to growing hay and drops to Shap Abbey before turning to pass high above the River Lowther, with the abbey below. It soon reaches the village of Keld with its chapel and just behind the village, the Goggleby Stone. It is the shortest walk that you can do to see the antiquities of the area.

Appleby - Dufton - Appleby (Walk ID: 216)
A very pleasant circuit from Appleby, starting from the train station on the Settle to Carlisle line. Dufton is a pretty village at the base of the Pennines, where there is a pub for a halfway stop.

Wet Sleddale (Walk ID: 3261)
A gem of a Lake District walk within very easy reach of the M6, it takes you past the filming location of 'Crow Cragg' in cult movie 'Withnail and I'.
