About us
Usually when you click an 'About Us' link on a website it starts and ends with a load of blurb about the company, its directors and so on. But before we get onto all that stuff we would like to emphasise that this site is really about its members.
The core content of the site is generated by a growing band of members who contribute walks and, equally importantly, maintain them afterwards. We are absolutely indebted to the 400 or so keen walkers who contribute their routes. Through them you have access to local knowledge and insider information that would be much more difficult to obtain otherwise.
Other members contribute by reporting back on problems encountered on the walks, either because the instructions need some tweaking or because something has changed on the ground. Their part in maintaining the quality of this walk guide is invaluable and helps to mark it out from printed guides which inevitably go out of date.
Finally members who subscribe or buy individual walks are the people who make it all possible. Their contribution is vital, allowing us to pay for the servers, hosting, licences, technical and administrative support.
Now for the corporate stuff.... Walkingworld Ltd is a private limited company. The website was conceived in 1999 by Nicholas Rudd-Jones and David Stewart. The site was built in early 2000 by David's media company, a specialist in content-managed websites. The business was joined by Chris Stewart, David's wife, who has managed the database of walks ever since with help from her daughters Jo and Frances.
Most importantly we are all keen walkers ourselves. David is also a member of one of the Lake District Mountain Rescue teams and a committee member for the local 'Walkers are Welcome' scheme.
At Walkingworld we are always open to new ideas. Please let us know if you think something can be improved.
We also take on the occasional web development and consultancy project, using our expertise in user-generated content, geo-location services and website communities. If you would like to discuss such a project please get in touch.
